Cartoonist, graphic artist, sculptor
Latvian sculptor and graphic artist, one of the first representatives of the Latvian sculpture school of the 20th century.
He studied with M. A. Chizhov at the St. Petersburg Central School of Technical Drawing Stieglitz (1893-99); improved in the workshop of O. Rodin (1900-05).
In 1906-07 he created political cartoons for the St. Petersburg Latvian satirical magazine “Svari” (“Libra”).
He taught at the Stieglitz School (1905-18) and at the Latvian Academy of Arts (1924-32). In easel works and portraits of Sh. the thoroughness and accuracy of the interpretation of forms are often combined with the picturesque manner of modeling.
Works: portraits of R. Kaudzit (1902) and M. Kaudzit (1912), both bronze, Art Museum of Latvia. SSR, Riga; K. Baumanis (bronze, 1928, Opera and Ballet Theater of the Latvian SSR, Riga).
In 1974, the Memorial Museum of G. Shkilter was opened in Riga.
