He was born in 1937 in San Anton and de los Baños.
He graduated from high school.
His “Foolish” appeared for the first time on the pages of the weekly “Zig-Zag” and soon became a symbol of the protest movement against the tyranny of Batista.
After the victory of the Cuban revolution, Nuez began collaborating in the newspaper “Re-volyon”, where he created “Don Cisano” (“Don Pyro”), his new hero, personifying the reactionary press. By this time, include his “Barbudos” (“Borodachi”), a series of humorous drawings, published entirely in the book “Cuba – yes!”.
In 1965 the Granma newspaper was created, and Nuez headed the department of political satire.
Nueus’ drawings were exhibited at exhibitions in Canada, Belgium, the USA, Czechoslovakia, the USSR, the GDR, Mexico, Peru, Chile. In addition, in Vietnam, in Czechoslovakia and Sweden, his solo exhibitions were successfully held. At home, Nués was awarded more than thirty awards, including the national prize “Juan Gualberto Gómez”. Seven times he was awarded the first prize of the National Salon of Humor “Horacio Rodriguez Suria”. René de la Nuez Robaina, a graduate of Journalism at the University of Havana, a member of the Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC) and the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) iand for his own right Illustrious Son of the Villa.
Born on September 8th, 1937 in San Antonio de los Baños, former province of Havana. Published his first cartoon at 16 in the journal pages of the Circle which is published in his hometown. In late 1956, while pursuing his third year of high school in Havana, began to collaborate in the weekly comedy Zig-Zag. The character of Loquito born in February 1957 and started professional cartoon. Later that year he obtained a cartoon as opposed to the newspaper Information, whose character called “Napo-Leon.” This was white humor with a more modern line.

René de la Nuez Robaina, graduado de Periodismo en La Universidad de La Habana, miembro de la Unión de Periodistas de Cuba (UPEC) y de la Unión de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC) es por derecho propio Hijo Ilustre de la Villa.
Nace el 8 de septiembre de 1937, en San Antonio de los Baños, antigua provincia de La Habana. Publica sus primeras caricaturas a los 16 años en la revista Páginas del Círculo que se edita en su pueblo natal. Allí también dibuja en el Vocero del Órgano Oficial de la Asociación Estudiantil Ariguanabense y en el Boletín Oficial de la Cámara de Comercio e Industriales. En este último, hace aparecer al “Loquito” en viñetas.
A finales de 1956, mientras cursa su tercer año de bachillerato en La Habana, comienza a colaborar en el semanario humorístico Zig-Zag. El personaje del Loquito nace en febrero de 1957 y se inicia como caricaturista profesional. A finales de ese año obtiene por oposición una tira cómica en el diario Información, cuyo personaje llama “Napo-León”. Este era de humor blanco y con una línea más moderna.
Al Triunfo de la Revolución Cubana, comienza a dibujar para el periódico Revolución y colabora en casi toda la prensa. Crea el personaje de Don Cizaño, el cual representa las publicaciones reaccionarias (contrafigura del Loquito).
En 1965 el periódico Revolución pasa a ser el diario Granma, órgano en el que trabajó muchos años como caricaturista editorial.
Se desempeñó como director del semanario humorístico Palante. Ha creado otros personajes de la prensa diaria como son Mogollón, Negativo Compañero, Blandengo y Barbudo, este último, símbolo del pueblo cubano que defiende las conquistas de la Revolución, es el logotipo de la Bienal Internacional del Humor que se celebra en San Antonio de los Baños.
El destacado caricaturista ariguanabense mereció el Premio Nacional de Periodismo Juan Gualberto Gómez en 1960 y la Medalla Raúl Gómez García. Nuez se destaca como humorista político y costumbrista, además de incursionar en la pintura. Es conocido por sus dibujos humorísticos en varios países del mundo.Incansable colaborador en diversas publicaciones nacionales e internacionales. Sus obras se han expuesto en México, Austria, Checoslovaquia, Finlandia, Canadá, Unión Soviética, Polonia, Alemania, Bulgaria, España, Nicaragua y Francia.
En el año 2007 este ariguanabense, creador de emblemáticos personajes que hicieron Revolución, recibe de manos de Abel Prieto, Ministro de Cultura, el Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas por su talento y prolífera labor.
El premio, instituido en 1994, se otorga cada año a un artista cubano vivo residente en el país.
El jurado del 2007, presidido por Pedro Pablo Oliva, Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas 2006, decidió dárselo a René de la Nuez en reconocimiento a sus más de 50 años de quehacer creativo y a la trascendencia, tanto artística como social, de una obra que ocupa un lugar privilegiado en el humorismo gráfico contemporáneo.
En el acto de entrega, en el Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, René de la Nuez, a quien le hubiera gustado más hacer un dibujo que hablar, como él mismo dijo, se refirió a la significación que este medio expresivo ha tenido en el desarrollo y evolución de la especie humana. En la ceremonia señaló: Lo que he hecho toda mi vida es dibujar la memoria histórica de mi pueblo y de la Revolución. Sólo pido tener fuerzas para seguir haciéndolo y cuando ocurra lo inexorable morir dibujando.
De la Nuez, es reconocido entre los cien más importantes caricaturistas del mundo prestigia la cultura local y nacional.
Con la entrega de este premio, la caricatura, muchas veces relegada dentro de las artes plásticas, recibió su justo reconocimiento y pasa a ocupar el lugar que le corresponde, destacó Adelaida de Juan en las palabras de elogio al artista
