Born April 4, 1895 in Borisov in the family of the artist-icon painter.
In the years 1910-1917. was engaged in the Higher School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. The first landscape sketches, which the young artist presented to the exhibition – “Evening on the river”, “After the rain”, “Arable land”, “Old road” – were created by him on vacation in Borisovka.

In the Soviet era, Khvostenko initially worked as a schedule. His political caricatures appeared in the magazine “Alarm Clock”. During the Civil War, campaign posters “Down with Pan from Ukraine!”, “Choose those for the Soviets of the poor and middle peasants!”, The panel “Long live the proletarian woman, the builder of a new life!” In 1921, she composes the production of the “Mystery Buff” VV Mayakovsky in the Kharkov Heroic Theater. The decoration of the operas “Carmen” (Kharkov and Kiev, 1934), “The Tsar’s Nest” (Kharkov, 1935), Natalka-Poltavka (Kharkov, 1936), Zaporozhets for the Danube “and” The Sold Bride “(Kiev, 1936, 1937). The design layout for the installation “Zaporozhets beyond the Danube” was exhibited in the Soviet pavilion of the International Exhibition in 1937 in Paris and was awarded a silver medal.

During the Great Patriotic War he participated in the creation of agitocon, painted posters. In the first months of the war he was the chief adviser on the camouflage of the objects of the Kharkiv Military District. From 1946 to 1952 – the main artist of the Kiev Opera and Ballet Theater. In the last years of his life he illustrated books, created a number of paintings. He died on December 19, 1968.
