Henry Büttner was an artist of satirical cartoons and comics that were mainly published in the DDR magazine Eulenspiegel for many years. Trained as a poster artist and window dresser, he worked in agriculture and as a singer before becoming a cartoonist in 1954. For decades, he was one of the house artists for East-German publications like Eulenspiegel, Berliner Zeitung and Wochenpost. His best-known character was the long thin man with the straw hat. Book collections of Büttner’s work have been publisshed since 1958. Retired since many years, he lives a reclusive life in his hometown Wittgensdorf bei Chemnitz.
