Father – a court cook, Afanasyev himself served at court with 1871 – stoker, from 1878 – a lackey.
He studied at the Academy of Arts as a volunteer in 1872-1880
1877 – for drawing from nature he received a silver medal.
1887 – Teaches at the Drawing School of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts.
1905 – Director of the Penza Art College.
1909-again teaching at the Drawing School
