Manuel Hernandes
Matanzas, Cuba
Cartoonist
Was born in 1943 in Matanzas.
Studied at the School of Fine Arts “Martirez de Bolivia” and dreamed to devote himself to oil painting, but eventually became interested in humorous graphics, which in the end became the main content of his creative work.
Manuel declared himself as a humorist in 1967, when he was awarded the first prize of the amateur caricaturist competition organized by the magazine “Palante”. Shortly thereafter, he became a full-time artist of “El Sable”, a weekly comic application of the “Juventud Rebelde” newspaper.
The first award was followed by many others: at almost all competitions of the National Salon of Humor “Oracio Rodriguez Suria” Manuel was awarded with prizes. Eight times he received the prize “Eduardo Abela” for the best series of drawings.
In 1979, Manuel was awarded the first prize of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba and a prize of the Ministry of Culture at the First International Biennale of Humor in San Antonio delos Baños.
Manuel is the permanent author of the magazine “DDT”.
